Find Federal Prison Releases

To find someone released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, begin with the federal locator rather than a Powell County jail roster. No physical federal prison was identified in Powell County, Kentucky. This federal system page serves the smaller group of Powell-connected cases involving a sentenced federal prisoner. A BOP result can preserve a release date or a status showing that federal prison custody ended. It does not prove release from Powell County Detention Center, the end of federal supervision, or freedom from every other agency's custody.

Federal Prison Release Scope

The Federal Bureau of Prisons runs the federal prison system. Its public locator is the right first source for a person who served a federal sentence in BOP custody. Powell County research did not identify a BOP institution inside the county. The facility-map entry therefore represents a federal system that can serve a relevant case, not a claim that a prison operates locally.

A federal defendant can pass through several custody stages. Local arrest or temporary local detention does not turn PCDC into a federal prison. A sentenced person may later enter BOP custody elsewhere. Another person may remain a federal pretrial detainee under the United States Marshals Service without ever appearing as a former BOP prisoner. Identify the custodian before choosing the search.

Custody boundary: a BOP result describes federal prison custody only and cannot confirm an ordinary Powell County jail release.

Confirm Federal Prison Releases

The BOP Inmate Locator supports a name search and searches by federal identifier. Available identifiers include a BOP register number and other federal numbers recognized by the locator. An identifier is safer than a name alone. When using a name, compare the available age, race, sex, and release information so a similar name is not mistaken for the intended person.

  1. Open the official BOP locator and choose name or number search.
  2. Enter the BOP register number when known, or use the complete name and available identity filters.
  3. Open the matching result and record the exact custody phrase and displayed release date.
  4. Check whether the result says “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” rather than rewriting the status.
  5. Use a federal court record or agency response when the result needs legal context or correction.

The Powell County home search covers local and state routes separately. Do not search KOOL for a purely federal sentence or use the PCDC Resident Directory as a former-federal-prisoner index.

Federal Release Record Fields

A BOP result is useful because it can remain after a person leaves federal prison custody. Treat each displayed field as a federal system statement, not a complete account of every later event.

Locator fieldWhat it helps establish
NameIdentifies the federal record, subject to same-name checks.
Register or federal numberProvides the strongest link to the intended BOP record.
Age, race, and sexHelp distinguish people with similar names.
Release dateReports the date associated with the BOP custody result when shown.
Custody wordingStates whether the person is released or no longer in BOP custody.

“Not in BOP Custody” is deliberately limited. The person may have completed BOP confinement, moved to another legal authority, or remain under federal supervised release. The locator does not certify a Powell County address, a local-jail event, or the end of all court obligations.

BOP Released Status Meaning

A former prisoner result can say “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody,” sometimes with a date. Preserve that exact meaning. It establishes that BOP no longer reports physical custody under that record. It does not say where the person went. Community supervision, a state warrant, immigration custody, or another hold may still matter.

The official locator shown below is the successful manifest image assigned to the federal release route. The BOP search page is the source for the interface.

The image demonstrates where a federal name or number search begins. It does not display a Powell County facility because none was identified, and it does not turn a federal result into proof of a local release.

Federal Prison Versus USMS

The United States Marshals Service manages federal pretrial prisoners. USMS does not offer a public former-prisoner locator equivalent to the BOP search. A person released after a federal hearing may never have been sentenced to BOP custody. In that situation, consult the federal court docket for the release or detention order and, when appropriate, request an existing USMS Prisoner Tracking System record through USMS FOIA.

A court order is strongest for the legal basis. The custodian's record is strongest for physical departure. Keep those two facts separate when processing occurred after the judge acted.

Federal Prison Records Contact

Because no federal prison is located in Powell County, there is no local BOP release desk or federal facility address to publish. Use the national locator for public status. For records beyond the public result, follow the official BOP or Department of Justice records process tied to the record sought. A narrow request should include the full name, register number, date of birth, approximate confinement dates, and the exact existing release record requested.

Do not send a BOP records request to PCDC merely because the person has a Powell connection. Likewise, a Kentucky Open Records Act request does not control federal records. The federal Freedom of Information Act governs access subject to federal exemptions and privacy limits.

Federal Release Destination Limits

A BOP release can lead to community placement, federal supervised release, another custodian, or immigration action, depending on the case. The Powell research does not supply a person-specific destination rule, so no local destination should be promised. Check the federal judgment and docket for supervised-release terms, then use the appropriate federal office when public confirmation is available.

If ICE may have taken custody, switch systems and use ODLS. If a Kentucky warrant or sentence may control, use the relevant state court and correctional records. If the event concerns PCDC, ask PCDC for its transfer or release entry. A single date can mark the end of one custodian's authority while another custody record continues.

Federal supervised release
Court-ordered monitoring after federal confinement; it is not prison custody.
Remand
A court order placing or keeping a defendant in custody.
Transfer
Movement to another custodian rather than an unrestricted departure.
Release date
The date tied to the BOP custody record, not proof that every legal restraint ended.

Powell Mixed-Custody Contrast

PCDC's official material describes a mixed local and Kentucky state population. That specific local feature can make a person at the county jail appear in KOOL or on a state parole list, and a later KDOC Daily Releases sheet can name PCDC as the releasing location. It does not create federal BOP custody. Current official sources should also take priority over older directories that blur the jail's role.

For a Powell record, first decide whether PCDC held a local detainee or a state-sentenced resident. Only supported federal case facts should move the search to BOP. This distinction prevents a state transfer or discharge from being mislabeled as a federal release simply because both systems use offender locators.

Resolve Federal Record Conflicts

Record the time each source was retrieved. The BOP locator, a federal docket, and a receiving agency can reflect different stages. If the locator says released but a later custodian reports current custody, both statements may be accurate within their own scope. State the sequence rather than choosing one label.

For identity conflicts, rely on the register number and court case identifiers. For a disputed BOP field, ask the federal office that maintains it about correction procedures and supply the source document supporting the request. Private summaries are never the tie-breaker over a federal record. A clear conclusion might say that BOP reports release on the displayed date while later custody remains unconfirmed, or that another named custodian reports a later admission.

Note: The absence of a federal prison in Powell County does not rule out a Powell-connected federal case, but it does rule out presenting BOP as a local jail.
